Garmin Nuvi 650 compatible mounts:

There is quite a selection of Garmin Nuvi 650 Mount options available out there; popular choices include the portable friction mount from Garmin itself, as well as the dash and air vent mounting options for those that don’t want to hang their GPS off the windshield. There is also a variety of third party and Garmin nuvi mounts to help you place it on your bicycle, motorcycle, and many other places as well.

Nuvi 650 Memory Upgrades – SD Memory cards:

The Garmin Nuvi 650’s SD memory card upgrade slots makes it easy and very cheap to load up pictures, music and custom data to your GPS. The prices on 512mb, 1GB, 2GB and even 4GB sd memory cards has dropped so drastically over the last 2 years that you won’t have to hurt your wallet to upgrade your Garmin 650’s memory capacity!

Introducing the Garmin Nuvi 650

The Garmin Nuvi 650 GPS is the follow up product to the immensely popular Garmin Nuvi 350 GPS, and Garmin’s entry level system into the 4.3” widescreen market. It keeps all the qualities and features that has made the Nuvi 350 the most popular GPS travel assistant for the last 2 years, and gives you the larger 4.3” touch widescreen (up from 3.5” touch screen on the previous 300 series nuvis).

Increasing the viewing and input real-estate hasn’t really taken away from the ultra-portable ‘shirt-pocket’ factor that a vast majority of buyers are looking for, but it certainly makes reading, multi-tasking, input, visual quest and more…all that much easier and more functional, and it certainly feels that the 4.3” widescreen form factor provides a more appropriate balance of function vs. portability (for automobile setups anyhow)

So what’s in the box?

The Nuvi 650 – Preloaded full coverage City Navigator for North America or Europe

The Suction Cup mount

Vehicle power adapter

USB cable

Quick Reference Guide

Unpacking the box you find your new Nuvi 650 Portable travel assistant and quickly realize that it has quite a large viewing surface, but remains quite small and compact, you could fit it quite easily into your pocket, although the new 4.3” inch widescreen means it would be a bit more of a squeeze then the previous 3.5” screens. The mounting is pretty self explanatory, and you won’t have any trouble to quickly figure out how the suction-style works. The power adapter and USB cable is pretty self explanatory as well, for charging your nuvi and plugging the gps into your computer respectively. One thing that might come as a shock and is sure to be upsetting to some is that there is no included full user manual, and were left with just a quick reference and getting started guide… with the full documentation and user manual being online unfortunately.

Physical Design of Garmin’s Nuvi 650 portable Travel Assistant

Front: The front of the nuvi 600 series shows of its major change from previous generations, its substantial screen real-estate addition… Measuring in at 4.3 inches (diagonal measurement standard) you have quite a larger viewing area then the previous nuvi 3XX series units, and with a resolution at this screen size of 480×272 pixels, the picture is as vivid, sharp and crisp as ever.

Side: On the sides we get a feeling for the Nuvi 650’s portability factor; measuring at under an inch of thickness, it’s quite easy to unmount and put in your shirt or pants pocket and carry along with you. On the right hand side we find the SD Card slot {top} for memory addition or software reading, along with the usb port {middle} for connecting to your personal computer and the headphone jack {bottom} for listening to the unit with ear buds.

Back: From the rear of the unit we see its single internal speaker which is more then adequately loud in common driving conditions like traffic and construction (unless drowned out by some loud music of course). We also find the antenna which is folded up to be parallel with the earth when in use, or folded into the unit when off.

Mount: Connecting the mount is pretty easy, and once in place its firm and secure, with no noticeable shaking or rattling and a strong range of adjustment motion to suit your ideal positioning of the unit.

Interface of Garmin’s Nuvi 650 GPS Navigator

The user interface on the Garmin nuvi 650 is simple, organized and intuitive. Menus, options and functions are organized well and the learning curve and usage time to explore and understand all of the Nuvi 650’s tools, functions and system is quite quick.

The touch screen is responsive and crisp, the button areas are large, and the keyboard keys along with an innovative and efficient auto-completion system make typing in addresses, scrolling the point of interest databases and finding the travel assistance you are looking for a breeze without much distraction from the road and traffic in front of you.

Navigating with the Nuvi 650 Sat-Nav

Selecting an address: Selecting an address with the Nuvi 650 GPS is an easy and self-explanatory process; with the options to select from predefined addresses, saved common destinations, choosing from a list of nearby destinations that match your criteria in the extensive point of interest databases or entering an address or location manually using the touch keyboard.

Getting to an address: Once a destination has been selected, the routing engine quickly organizes and maps out the quickest and most efficient route from your current location, and a series of visual prompts appear to guide you along your journey. Audio prompts are timely and well developed as well to help you know your next move well before it happens so that you don’t have to take your eyes off the road.

Rerouting: Even if you somehow miss a turn or make a mistake along your journey, the rerouting engine kicks in and quickly but carefully recalculates the series of directions and turns to get you to your ultimate destination… it really makes for a much more stress free journey when you know that even if you take a wrong turn or wrong road that you will quickly alerted that you have and promptly have new directions at hand.

Third Party Tools & Utilities on the Garmin 650

Garmin’s Nuvi 650 personal travel assistant offers a wide variety of tools and functions other than its basic navigational assistance:

MP3 Player / Audio Books: Listen to MP3 music or audio books along your travel, with settings to make sure that the music fades out when an important audio prompt plays and fades back in to make sure you don’t miss an important turn

Photo Viewer: Take pictures along your vacation or journey with your digital camera and then check them out or show them off with the 650’s photo viewer application

Currency, Measurements, Time Conversion: Know what time it is in a different destination, understand and convert various units of measurement and check to see how much your money is worth with various conversion tools.

Language Guide: Translate words, phrases and writing from one language to another and learn how to pronounce words with the text-to-speech function

Pros – What’s great about it?

Display – Very readable, bright and useable

Portability – very thin and light making it easy to quickly take with you

NAVTEQ– best in the market

Routing engine – quick and accurately picks routes

Battery Life – Very long @ about 8hours

- is responsive and strong; satellites quickly lock on and don’t lose signal easily

The list seems to go for quite a while

Cons – What could be better?

Somewhat fragile casing could be made more sturdy

Route exclusion could be added

Multiple-Destination routing could be added

Physical volume control could be added

I’m sure we missed some not so major areas that could use improvement

Conclusion: Is it worth it?

The Garmin Nuvi 600 series continues to be the most popular option among first time shoppers and hardcore enthusiast alike and with its blend of affordability, (prices have dropped dramatically since its initial introduction), solid and dependable performance, and advanced and useful set of travel tools… it clearly shines as an obvious and smart choice for someone looking to buy a portable navigation solution.

Garmin Nuvi 650 Vs. Nuvi 660, 670 and 680

If you are thinking about buying a Nuvi GPS or the Nuvi 650 in particular, its probably a good idea to brush up on what each model offers. There is no more frustrating feeling then to purchase something and then to realize the features you were exciting about or hoping for were actually on a more expensive model, or to spend to much and buy a system that has extras that you will not use and need not spend extra money for:

Garmin’s Nuvi lineup has expanded too many series and models, and choosing and recognizing what model is the most appropriate choice without missing a feature you want or overspending for features you don’t need can be a daunting task. To help streamline the process and help you make the most educated, effective and quick decision, we have put together some basic information on the differences between series, models and the above complete chart comparison.

Step 1: Choosing and Comparing the Nuvi 650 to the 660, 670, and 680

Garmin Nuvi 650

The Garmin nuvi 650 gps system is the entry level unit into the 4.3” wide-touch-screen size, and as such offers shoppers the lowest price while skipping out on some of the advanced travel tools (Bluetooth hands free calling, msn direct local data, fm transmitter) and comes ready out of the box for only North America OR Euro depending on which model you buy.

The most popular choice for shoppers that only want the core navigation assistance out of their system, with little need for fancy extras and travel tools, and not intending on taking their unit transatlantic

Garmin Nuvi 660:

The Garmin Nuvi 660 is a little bit more popular in terms of units sold, and offers a different balance of price vs. performance… adding features that are very helpful for many people, while still maintaining a fair price tag (+$50 USD)

From Nuvi 650 to Nuvi 660

Bluetooth -hands free calling when paired with cell phone

FM Transmitter – Play sound prompts, music and audio through your cars audio system and speakers

TMC Traffic – Get information about traffic conditions, jams, etc… and integrate the data with the nuvis routes to make your commute more efficient and hassle free

Garmin Nuvi 670:

Garmin’s Nuvi 670 main value adds is the fact that it comes ready straight out the box ready and more-then-capable of transatlantic travel. It has all added advanced feature of the Nuvi 660 vs. Nuvi 650 and adds the ability for you to access all maps, information, and points of interest in both North America and Euro… A price increase of about $120 over the Nuvi 660, but much cheaper then upgrading your Nuvi 650, 660, or 680 to be ready for transatlantic travel (approx. $200-$300)

From Nuvi 660 to Nuvi 670

Transatlantic Capability: Both North American and Euroan travel ready out the box ($200-$300 standalone upgrade)

Add approximately $130 USD (Feb. 2008)

Garmin Nuvi 680:

The Garmin Nuvi 680 is actually both an upgrade/downgrade of the Nuvi 670, removing the value of the pre-loaded transatlantic capability, but adding MSN Direct access and capability for North American areas. MSN Direct integration adds features such as real-time weather data, up to the minute gas prices, movie theater listings, and a whole slew of other local and time sensitive information useful for travelers (read up on MSN Direct services)

**Double Check MSN Direct service in your area **

From Nuvi 660 to Nuvi 680

North American maps + data only: Choose between North American OR Euro capable on the Nuvi 660

MSN Direct services: A bunch of local, live, and new features available in certain areas through MSN direct data integration

Add approximately $70 USD (Feb. 2008)

Want to buy the garmin nüvi 650? Then make sure that you take an appropriate amount of time to make sure that you can locate a good deal or the current cheapest and best priced Nuvi 650 GPS unit online or offline.

It’s in my experience that consumer electronic stores such as BestBuy or Wal-mart, while highly competitive in many areas, do not indeed offer anywhere near the lowest and cheapest prices available on such items as the Nuvi-650 travel assistant. A little research online paints a much more varied range of stores offering an even wider range of pricing and if you are willing to shop around a bit, you will come across some great discounts and cheap sales on most items.

Here’s a nice little video preview and garmin nuvi 650 review that showcases some of the navigational help the gps system offers. Note the quality and clarity of the voice and visual directions and the clarity of the screen (in nighttime driving conditions) with the larger and bright widescreen (6XX series garmin GPS units)

The first thing you notice is the color of the screen. As soon as it gets dark out the Nuvi 650 will switch into night mode so the screen is easier to read in the dark. The background turns black and everything seems a little brighter like the directions and information in the bottom corners.

The Nuvi650 is extremely accurate with its direction giving. For a turn more than 500 feet away it will give the distance in miles and it’s accurate to a tenth of a mile. Under 500 feet it will start giving the distance in feet. Once you’re within 200 feet it will be accurate up to 50 feet and once you’re under 50 feet it will be accurate up to the foot so you’ll know exactly when to turn. Once you are 100 feet away it will give a voice prompt telling you the direction to turn and the street to turn on to make sure you don’t miss it. After making a turn it will let you know how far away the next turn is and what the street name is and direction it will be.

Notice at the start of the video how he has a list containing 2 places and how far they are and the direction they’re in. This is his list of favorites. You can save places you go regularly so you don’t have to always find them on the list or type them in. You just pick one off the list and it’ll bring up more detail about the location and then hit “Go!” to get there.

The Garmin Nuvi 650 Personal Travel Assistant for North America works great for me. I took it out of the box and hit the road with it. The interface was easy to use without the very small instructions it used and there is an owner’s manual you can download off the website if you are having any problems. I don’t know why The Nuvi 650 doesn’t just come with its manual, maybe because it’s so easy to use. I like that it shows all the street names, not just the one you are on, and it can accurately estimate your arrival time. I had it delivered right to my hotel and it arrived on time and properly addressed. I’d use amazon.com again.

I have already recommend and will keep on doing so the Garmin Nuvi 650 to friends, family, co-workers and even random people where the conversation was fitting… It’s one hell of a device that truly deserves all the praise that I constantly see it receiving online. Go ahead and get this folks, the price is even cheaper and better then when I bought it, and if you even 1/5th as happy with the purchase as I have been overall for buying the nuvi 650, you will be incredibly satisfied!

2. Main Menu

The Garmin Nuvi 650 has a very user friendly system. It’s straight forward with only 3 options. “Where to?” “View map” and “Other”. Just tap your choice on the touch screen and you can navigate through the neatly organized categories. It’s a very simple interface which is important when you’re driving

3. Navigating and Driving

The Nuvi 650 can display your route of travel in either 2D or 3D with a white backlight to make it easier to see in the night mode. It’s very easy to read with different colors for different roads and images symbolizing different things like POI’s on the map. The directions are visually shown on the map, written in text, and told to you by a voice who sometimes horribly butchers the street names, but is always understandable. If you’re still missing your turns after all this, I think you need somebody else driving. Also shown is distance to the next turn and estimated time of arrival.

4. Accuracy and Route Control

Having a WAAS GPS receiver by SiRF, the Nuvi 650 is top of the line in accuracy, range, and speed of data delivery. I tested it by using some POI’s I knew how to get to as where I wanted to go and seeing which way it told me to get there. For most spots in and around my city and state it used the route I would have used to get there. Even if you miss a turn you don’t be told to make a U-turn and get back on the same path. It will be recalculated and the shortest path from your current position and direction will be given.

Route control is amazing as well with the ability to pick the shortest time or shortest distance for the route. You can also control things like only paved roads or avoid highways and tolls.

5. Portability/Design

The Garmin 650 is only 4.9″ x 2.9″ and less than an inch wide so it would easily fit in your pocket. The widescreen is 3.81″ x 2.25″ so it covers almost the entire front of the unit. The suction cup to attach it to the windshield is very easy to mount.

6. MP3, Pictures, and More

There is a great MP3 player that plays well through the built in speakers. It has an audio line out jack or an FM transmitter can be purchased for this device (although the 660 comes with it) to play it through your car speakers.

The picture viewer works well for checking out any pictures you’ve taken on your trip. It’s handy if you’ve got pictures you’d like to show to somebody.

Other handy features are the world travel clock, the currency and measurement converters if you’re traveling to another country, and the calculator to name just a few of the many incredibly handy tools and utilities the garmin nuvi 650 packs into an affordable package

7. Points of Interest

The Nuvi 650 comes ready to go with almost 6 million POI’s containing entertainment destinations, hotels, restaurants, and ATM’s from all over. It also has the ability to have custom POI’s inputted from your computer with free software like POI Leader. This means you can download POI databases from the internet and have them uploaded onto your device.

You can set your Nuvi to notify you if you are traveling a certain speed near a POI so it’s easy to download a database of all the speed traps in your area and have your Nuvi alert you if you are speeding by one.

8. Accessories

There are many accessories such as the Garmin Travel Guide for either North America or Europe, language guide, traffic receiver, and friction mount.

9. Visitor Reviews

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

This review will assist someone like me who am not familiar with GPS systems and am looking for basic functionality. I was looking for a unit that is portable so I could also use it for walking or in rental cars and has a widescreen display, so I settled on comparing a Garmin Nuvi 650 with a Plenio VXA-5000.
The Plenio doesn’t say any street names but the Nuvi will say the actual street you want to turn down…

Hey, I just bought the Garmin Nuvi 650 and I really like the bright display and good contrasting colors on control buttons/icons. It has a thin case that allows more versatility in mounting. When you start it up it has really quick satellite reception. The MP3 and picture viewer features although the picture viewer …

This GPS is the best. Spend a little extra $$ to buy a good gps and you won’t be disappointed. The wide display on the 650 is bright and easy to read at a glance or in the glare of the sun. The touchscreen works beautifully. Response to input is quick and consistent. If I had one bad thing to say…

10. Video of Usage

Here’s a nice video of the Nuvi at some demonstration. It shows all of its features in use:

11. Compare the 650, 660, and 670

The Garmin Nuvi 650, 660, and 670 are all very similar. The 650 is the basic device and the other two build on top of it. From the 650 to the 660 you get added Bluetooth hands free technology and FM transmitter. Upgrading to the 670 you get added European maps. The cost of adding the FM transmitter to the Nuvi 650 is $171.51 and you cannot add the Bluetooth but the cost of buying the 660 is less than a $171.51 difference. The cost of adding the European maps to the 660 is almost $300 while buying the 670 instead of the 660 is a worthwhile buy. Of course, if these aren’t necessary features for you, they might not be worthwhile buys.

Garmin Nuvi 650: Basic Unit and most affordable for people without need for listed bonus features below

Garmin Nuvi 660: Add Bluetooth, Handfree Calling, FM Transmitter ($171.51 Value)

Garmin Nuvi 670: Add Bluetooth, Handfree Calling, FM Transmitter, and European Databases ($460 Value)

Shopping around for the Garmin Nuvi 650? In our experience you will find huge savings online against your average BestBuy, Walmart or offline retail store, and if you spend some time to compare the various online retailers, you may be able to find a really great discount or sale for this unit.

Ebay offered decent prices, although with shipping and insurance added, they aren’t the absolute cheapest price I was able to track down (also note security precautions and need for experience to get good and lowest prices through this company)

The best price I was able to track down, is also the most trusted and longest running marketplace online - amazon.com - where you have 6-7 stores all represented by this reputable dealer selling the unit, some with incredibly hot discount sales running right now, with an average savings noted of over 15% from other on and offline stores to buy the garmin nuvi 650:

Recently I went down to a local electronics store and tested a bunch of GPS devices out. The Nuvi 650 gps had the most user-friendly menu featuring three choices: Where to? Show map, and Other.

To go to a location, you select the “Where to” selection followed by an address, store type, favorites, etc. Simply type in a few letters and the unit matches addresses, store names etc. based on only a few entries.

If my computer illiterate wife can easily use the machine to enter an address (she never could figure out my Garmin GPS V worked) then I believe it is a good choice for most people. Plus the screen size is one of the largest in the market.

Also if you are looking around, Amazon had the lowest complete price (price + shipping) of all the vendors I checked online for the garmin nuvi 650 shopping, so good luck if you are shopping there

This Nuvi 650 is a a nice upgrade from my Garmin eMap. It makes me really appreciate the features of a well-made GPS. Here’s what sets this unit apart in my opionion:

The wide display on the 650 is bright, quick, and easy to read while driving. The touchscreen works beautifully.

With the 3D perspective, you can see much more than can be displayed in 2D, so there’s less need to zoom out to see roads that wouldn’t be displayed in the 2D window.

The design of this unit is excellent. It’s very thin but still feels solidly made. It looks and feels high quality.

The cost against the Nuvi 660 was a good deal. I didn’t need the Bluetooth or FM transmitter.

The pre-loaded 6 million points of interest are amazing. In just a few days this unit has pointed out many local POI’s I’ve never been to before. When I travel in unfamiliar territory, I frequently need to find a restaurant or bank or other something and now I’m saving time locating them quickly. Plus, the support for downloadable POI’s is like being able to pick out tours of wherever you’re going.

Sound output is also very good, connected to my car stereo thru the aux input.
Why it didn’t get five stars from me:

The routing software is very good, and the voice prompts are very clear and timely, and ultimately it gets you there, but like other portable units, occasionally it will choose an odd path that is less than ideal, and send you off on an unnecessary parallel detour.

I miss the tracking “bread-crumbs” feature that records your movement, and is useful for back-tracking.

The picture viewer displays large jpegs, and can zoom in on them, but the initial view is small, not zoomed to fit the window. And zooming is slow. Ideally, it would auto-zoom

Overall I’m incredibly impressed and would definitely recommend and buy the garmin nuvi 650 again!

This GPS is the best. Spend a little extra $$ to buy a good gps and you won’t be disappointed. The wide display on the garmin 650 is bright and easy to read at a glance or in the glare of the sun. The touchscreen works beautifully. Response to input is quick and consistent.

If I had one bad thing to say, it would be the routing software is very good, and the voice prompts are very clear and timely, and ultimately it gets you there, but like other portable units, occasionally it will choose an odd path that is less than ideal. But overall, it is insignificant. I don’t know why I didn’t buy this a long time ago. I saved some money vs. the 660 by skipping the Bluetooth, and FM transmitter features.
