This Nuvi 650 is a a nice upgrade from my Garmin eMap. It makes me really appreciate the features of a well-made GPS. Here’s what sets this unit apart in my opionion:

  • The wide display on the 650 is bright, quick, and easy to read while driving. The touchscreen works beautifully.
  • With the 3D perspective, you can see much more than can be displayed in 2D, so there’s less need to zoom out to see roads that wouldn’t be displayed in the 2D window.
  • The design of this unit is excellent. It’s very thin but still feels solidly made. It looks and feels high quality.

  • The cost against the Nuvi 660 was a good deal. I didn’t need the Bluetooth or FM transmitter.
  • The pre-loaded 6 million points of interest are amazing. In just a few days this unit has pointed out many local POI’s I’ve never been to before. When I travel in unfamiliar territory, I frequently need to find a restaurant or bank or other something and now I’m saving time locating them quickly. Plus, the support for downloadable POI’s is like being able to pick out tours of wherever you’re going.
  • Sound output is also very good, connected to my car stereo thru the aux input.
Why it didn’t get five stars from me:
  • The routing software is very good, and the voice prompts are very clear and timely, and ultimately it gets you there, but like other portable units, occasionally it will choose an odd path that is less than ideal, and send you off on an unnecessary parallel detour.
  • I miss the tracking “bread-crumbs” feature that records your movement, and is useful for back-tracking.
  • The picture viewer displays large jpegs, and can zoom in on them, but the initial view is small, not zoomed to fit the window. And zooming is slow. Ideally, it would auto-zoom

Overall I’m incredibly impressed and would definitely recommend and buy the garmin nuvi 650 again!
